Premier League Updates: Mejbri Suspended for Misconduct; Guardiola Insists 'Back Line Must Improve'
From the world of English football news, a key midfielder was handed a substantial suspension, a manager has singled out a defender's mistakes to prove a point, and the Manchester City manager has called for backline betterment following a wild victory.
1. Mejbri Given Four-Game Ban and Financial Penalty
The Clarets' midfielder Hannibal Mejbri was issued a four-game suspension and a ÂŁ15,000 penalty for misconduct in a recent fixture versus Leeds United. The Football Association confirmed the player faced a separate regulatory commission after allegations of spitting in the direction of visiting supporters around the 67th mark of a 2-0 win for Burnley.
An FA statement said: “A Regulatory Commission has punished Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri due to his actions in the Premier League game with Leeds of 18 October. It was alleged that the player acted in breach of the laws of the game and/or in a poor way by using offensive and unacceptable conduct through spitting towards the area of Leeds United supporters.”
The statement continued, “Mejbri later admitted the allegation, and the Regulatory Commission handing down a four-match ban and £15,000 following a hearing. The panel's full explanation for the sanction are to be released at a later date.” Burnley, currently 19th in the table, visit 12th-placed Newcastle this Saturday.
2. Maresca Singles Out Adarabioyo's Mistakes to Make a Point
The Blues' head coach Enzo Maresca has stated that not having experience is no a problem for his team, pointing out how defender Tosin Adarabioyo's years did not prevent the 28-year-old from playing poorly in the loss to Leeds United.
Maresca, who manages the youngest team in the division, rejected the idea that mentality was a factor in their setback. He presented his case by criticising Tosin, the oldest outfield player on the pitch, after he delivered a mistake-riddled performance at the back.
“We always talk about experience when we drop points,” the coach said. “After we beat Barcelona, the draw against Arsenal, no one was mentioning experienced personnel. I know that if we lose, we are always searching for an explanation, but I think the reason why we lost against Leeds was not down to the experience, it’s because we were not good enough.”
Maresca continued, “Who is the oldest one on our team in the match? It was Tosin. Did he play good? So, it isn't related to experience. It’s about those 11 players, they were not up to standard.”
Guardiola Says Defence 'Must Improve'
The Manchester City manager has stated the champions have learnt from their recent scare against Fulham and the game is now forgotten. The team survived for a 5-4 win in a remarkable clash at Craven Cottage, after leading 5-1 with about 60 minutes played.
This followed they resisted a Leeds fightback and won 3-2 in their prior fixture, it raised further doubts about whether they are the defensive steel enough to mount a title challenge against pace-setters Arsenal. “That game is behind us,” he said. “Good learnings, hopefully. At this level, for every team, one must take onboard both good and bad performances and bad things and think of what's next.”
“Naturally I’m concerned,” Guardiola added. “We try to analyse what happened, so as not to allow the goals. With the three goals scored by Leeds, and the five against Fulham it shows the two versions, right? Therefore, always done plenty of positive things. Yet the number of attempts had Leeds have? Three? They scored two. That ratio is good. How many shots on target did Fulham have? Five, six? So, our ratio of chances conceded we can see too high. We have to improve.”
Newcastle Prioritise on Livramento and Botman Deals
Newcastle United's recently appointed football chief, Ross Wilson, has placed new deal negotiations with key backline players Tino Livramento and Sven Botman the priority on his agenda at St James’ Park. Wilson joined after leaving Nottingham Forest recently and was pleased that midfielder Sandro Tonali has a contract extending to 2029 and, potentially, 2030.
That has left Wilson free to focus on negotiations for Livramento and Botman's representatives. Livramento's agreement ending in 2027 and Botman's a year later, Newcastle's talks are being treated with some urgency.
“My first few days in the job was when I discovered that Sandro’s deal was much more secure than I was expecting,” he stated. “However, it is no secret that we wishes to renew Tino’s deal and also wants to extend Sven Botman’s too. These talks are underway.”
Manager Eddie Howe will be missing Botman against the match with Burnley on Saturday, and he likely to be sidelined for at least a further period.
5. Nuno Says Paquetá Returns Against Brighton
The Hammers' manager Nuno EspĂrito Santo has stated that Lucas Paquetá will return to start for the side play Brighton on Sunday, having completed a ban for the red card against Liverpool.
“That incident is in the past,” Nuno said. “I am confident it will not happen again because he himself acknowledged his mistake. We spoke about it internally. I am positive it is over and it will not happen again.”
He also understands the significant pressure facing his team, currently 18th ahead of the weekend matches. “We cannot avoid it,” he admitted. “It is a reality. We have to confront it. We are fighting for survival. We can't hide it.”
Arteta Impressed by No 9 Stand-in Merino
Mikel Merino may keep his place as Arsenal’s centre-forward even when the club's usual strikers return from injury. The midfielder has been playing as a makeshift No 9 because of fitness issues to Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
He scored Arsenal’s opener versus Brentford and set up Bukayo Saka for the second goal in a 2-0 win which preserved {their|
