Boston's Leader Mayor Wu Addresses President Trump's Threat to Relocate World Cup Games from City

Boston's mayor, Michelle Wu, implied that the municipality was ready for a dispute with US President Donald Trump regarding his assertion that he could instruct FIFA to remove World Cup games from the stadium in Foxborough, situated 22 miles southwest of the city.

Mayor Wu spoke on a local podcast this week to respond to criticism from the Trump administration, which had labeled her as "radical left." President Trump had threatened that he would call FIFA President Gianni Infantino if Boston did not "clean up its act."

Much of it is secured by agreement so that no single person, even the president, can undo it.

Wu continued, "We live in a time where for attention, for power, for pushing the boundaries ... ongoing threats ... are directed at individuals and communities who refuse to back down and submit or be obedient to a hateful agenda."

Mayor Wu further stated, "We are going to continue being ourselves, and that means, sadly, we are going to be part of a discussion that is targeting Boston's values." Wu finished by emphasizing her support for the city, saying, "Ten toes down for our city."

The President's Comments and FIFA's Involvement

Recently, FIFA President Gianni Infantino was seen alongside President Trump at the international summit in Egypt. The FIFA president has also been to the Oval Office and presented World Cup tournament and Club World Cup awards to the president as presents.

Earlier, President Trump was asked about recent disturbances in South Boston that involved a police car being set on fire. Trump replied, "If somebody is doing a bad job, and if I feel there's unsafe conditions, I would call Gianni – the president of the organization, who's great."

Trump added, "I would say: 'We should relocate the games' and they would comply. He wouldn't love to do it. But he would do it very easily." Trump also directly criticized Mayor Wu, stating, "Boston's mayor is ineffective ... she's far-left, and they're dominating some areas in Boston. That's a pretty big statement, right?"

Previous Warnings and 2026 World Cup Details

President Trump has previously suggested that he would have the same conversation with the FIFA president about relocating matches from Seattle and San Francisco, which are among the 16 locations across the continent.

The US is joint hosts the 2026 tournament with neighboring countries. The expanded tournament is planned to be held from June 11 to 19 July next summer.
